The Riverside Press-Enterprise is reporting a new brush fire has broken out in Redlands, east of San Bernardino, where at least five acres have burnt and is now threatening homes.
UPDATE 3:42 p.m.: Redlands city spokesman Carl Baker has said homes in this fire have been damaged, but not destroyed. It is unclear how many homes were damaged.
The Redlands Fire Department has issued a mandatory evacuation for Sunset Drive west of Helen Drive and Edgemont Drive and Fairmont Drive are also under a mandatory evacuation.
The Red Cross has established an evacuated center at the Joslyn Senior Center at 21 Grant Street in Downtown Redlands.
The fire is at Helen Drive and Sunset Drives, south of the San Bernardino Freeway. The fire, according to Redlands Fire Department spokesman Carl Baker, began about 1:30 p.m.
The fire is burning east of the Redlands Country Club.
UPDATE 2:48 p.m.: One media report indicates flames are "creeping closer" to homes.
UPDATE 3:29 p.m.: The Helen Fire has consumed about 17 acres around Sunset Drive and San Timoteo Canyon according to Redlands Fire Chief Jeff Frazier.
Mr. Frazier told the Redlands Daily Facts, "We believe we have stopped all forward progress."
